The western boundary is marked by the extensive Intracoastal Waterway, linking points north and south along the coast, and the Atlantic Ocean marks the edge of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea to the east.

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea has three main access points. The first is a bridge along Commercial Boulevard near the southern end of the community. To the immediate west of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, across the Intracoastal Waterway, are neighborhoods like Imperial Point and Coral Ridge Isles, as well as a number of smaller canal-home enclaves. A portion of the island occupied by Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is carved out by the village of Sea Ranch Lakes.

The general layout of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is an area that is 2.6 miles from north to south and relatively narrow from east to west. The area east of Ocean Drive is given over mostly to low rise condos (except for the area belonging to Sea Ranch Lakes), and to the west are luxury residential neighborhoods, many of which offer residents canalside locations.
